Six Tar Heels Competing In U.S. Amateur
August 13, 2023 | Men's Golf
Round One Begins Monday In Colorado
The University of North Carolina men's golf program will be well represented as six current or former Tar Heels will compete in the 2023 United States Amateur August 14-20 in Colorado.
Â
Current Tar Heels David Ford, Maxwell Ford, Austin Greaser and Dylan Menante, plus Joshua Martin, a senior in 2019, and first-year assistant coach Noah Goldman, qualified or were exempt to play in this year's U.S. Amateur.
Â
More than 7,500 players attempted to qualify for this year's tournament, which will be played at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village and the Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo.
Â
All 356 players in the field will play one round apiece at each course on August 14-15. Match play at Cherry Hills, where Arnold Palmer won the U.S. Open in 1960, begins with the top 64 players from stroke play on Wednesday, August 16.
Â
Ford, Greaser and Menante were among 71 players exempt from qualifying.
Â
Ford was exempt as a member of the 2023 U.S. Walker Cup team and a top-10 ranking in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He was a first-team All-America and ACC Player of the Year last season and a member of the 2023 U.S. Palmer Cup team.
Â
Greaser, a 2021 U.S. Amateur finalist, was exempt by returning a 72-hole score from the 2022 U.S. Open, by playing for Team USA in the 2022 World Amateur Team Championship in France where he finished third in the individual standings, and by a top-10 ranking in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Â
Greaser has won 13 times in match play the last two years in the NCAA Championship, Western Amateur (which he won in 2022) and U.S. Amateur. He won five matches, including wins over Jacob Bridgeman, Ross Steelman and Travis Vick, en route to the 36-hole championship match in 2021, where Michigan State's James Piot prevailed, 2&1.
Â
Greaser also was a member of the 2023 Palmer Cup team.
Â
Menante advanced to the semifinals a year ago. He earned his exemption by that finish and a top-50 ranking in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Â
Menante won four matches in the U.S. Amateur last year before eventual champion Sam Bennett won a back-and-forth match, 1 up, in the semifinals. Menante has won matches in each of the last three NCAA Championships, including the 2023 Championship when he defeated Luke Potter of Arizona State, 5&3, and Georgia Tech's Cristo Lamprecht, 6&5, winning 14 of 28 holes over those two matches.
Â
Maxwell Ford, who transferred to UNC after playing two seasons at Georgia, Martin and Goldman played their way to Colorado through qualifying tournaments.
Â
Goldman was a co-medalist to secure one of two spots at a qualifier in Corvallis, Ore., Martin earned one of two spots in late-June at the Carolina Golf Club in Charlotte, and Ford grabbed one of six spots in Johns Creek, Ga.
Â
Martin, from Pinehurst, shot 30 on the front nine of the final round in the 2018 NCAA Kissimmee (Fla.) Regional to help UNC advance to the NCAA Championship, where earned honorable mention All-America honors.
Â
Greaser will play the first round at the Colorado Golf Club; the other five Tar Heels in the field will begin at Cherry Hills.
Â
Cherry Hills has played host to three U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships and two previous U.S. Amateurs (in 1990 and 2012). The Colorado Golf Club was the site of the 2010 Senior PGA Championship and 2013 Solheim Cup.
