WBB Picks Up Multiple National Team Of The Week Awards
January 9, 2024 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women's basketball team has garnered multiple National Team of the Week honors and climbed back into both national polls after earned wins over two ranked teams in a four-day span.
Â
On Monday, Carolina was announced as the ESPN Team of the Week and moved back into the Associated Press poll at No. 20. On Tuesday, the Tar Heels added USBWA (U.S. Basketball Writers Association) honors to the list and took over the No. 22 spot in the USA Today Sports/WBCA coaches' poll.
Â
Carolina (11-4, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) has another opportunity this week as the team heads south to take on No. 21 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., on Thursday evening.
Â
After opening ACC play with a homecourt win over Clemson on Dec. 31, the Tar Heels fell out of the Associated Press poll and were replaced by Syracuse, which moved into the rankings at No. 25. Three days later the two faced off head-to-head, with Carolina beating the Orange 75-51 in Chapel Hill.
Â
With their first ranked win of the season secured, the Tar Heels hit the road with the chance to pick up their first ranked road win. UNC traveled to South Bend, Ind., and beat No. 16 Notre Dame 61-57 Sunday, becoming the only team in the nation to pick up two ranked wins during the week.
Â
Following the FSU game, UNC returns home to host Virginia on Sunday at Carmichael. That game is set for 4 p.m. and is North Carolina's annual Alumni Day. This year's event has special meaning as the Tar Heels commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1994 NCAA Championship and honor that team.
