David Ford Leads By One At Williams Cup

North Carolina senior David Ford birdied the 18th hole to shoot 68 for the second consecutive day and take a one-stroke lead after 36 holes in the Williams Cup presented by STITCH at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington.
Ford's final-hole birdie lifted eighth-ranked UNC to within two shots of No. 4 Arizona State at the top of the team standings. For the second day in row the Sun Devils edged the Tar Heels by one stroke. ASU is 7-under 569 after two rounds with Carolina second at 5-under 571, one shot ahead of defending NCAA champion and third-ranked Auburn.
Notre Dame is fourth at 2 over par and NC State is fifth at 6 over.
Ford, who won the Williams Cup a year ago and finished second as a freshman and sophomore, is 8-under 136 and has a one-shot lead over ASU's Connor Williams and a two-shot advantage over Auburn's Josiah Gilbert.
Williams shot a bogey-free, 5-under 67 on Monday, the best round of the first two days of competition.
UNC's Maxwell Ford and Notre Dame's Jacob Modleski are tied for fourth at 3 under. Ford opened with a 69 on Sunday and followed that with an even-par 72 today.
Tar Heel freshman Ethan Paschal shot a second-round 72, Keaton Vo carded a 73 and Hampton Roberts finished with a 74.
Eagle Point played slightly more difficult in the second round with scores averaging 74.85, about a quarter of a shot higher than the first round.
After 36 holes seven players are below par and two others are at even par.
