GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite a spirited comeback effort in the second half, No. 14 North Carolina could not complete the feat against No. 2 UConn, falling 69-58 to the Huskies in Greensboro.
Posting multiple scoring runs throughout the second half, North Carolina (3-1) showed promise among its younger core with multiple setting new career-highs. In her first game of the season for UNC, Indya Nivar scored team leading 15 points and snagged nine rebounds.
Starting in her first game of the season coming off of injury, Nivar showed she was back from the get-go with nine-points in the first quarter. However, UConn's offense started humming at a high level to go up 24-14 through 10 minutes.
An 8-0 run from the Tar Heels within the waning minutes of the first half began to cut into the Huskies lead, cutting the deficit to 12 at 38-26 at the break.
Youth for the Tar Heels began to shine throughout the second half with Ciera Toomey setting a career-best with 10 points, as UNC held UConn to multiple scoring droughts to keep the game within striking distance.
Pulling within nine as 7:03 remained on the clock, there was not enough gas left in the tank for UNC to complete the comeback, coming up short 69-58.
