November 29, 2024 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Returning home to Carmichael Arena for the first time in over three weeks, No. 16 North Carolina women's basketball set numerous records in a 119-43 victory over NC Central on Friday afternoon. The 119 points sets a Banghart-era record, as the Tar Heels have now won four in-a-row.
Twelve Tar Heels found their way to the hoop, as North Carolina (7-1) toppled NC Central (0-9) for its eighth consecutive program win over the Eagles. Six for Carolina wrapped their days in double-figure scoring, with Alyssa Ustby dropping a season-high 24 points. Ustby also grabbed 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the year.
Returning to the court, Maria Gakdeng snagged her first double-double of the season and eighth of her career off of a season-high 10 points and 11 rebounds. The hot streak for Trayanna Crisp continues, with 13 points for her second straight game in double-figures. Tallying 11 points each, Lexi Donarski and Indya Nivar added to the Tar Heel's record setting day, while Ciera Toomey matched a career-best with 10 points.
Sharing is caring, as Carolina dished out a Banghart record 28 assists with Reniya Kelly leading the charge with a career-high six helpers. The Tar Heels loved to say nope today with another Banghart record of 11 blocks in a single game. Gakdeng and Ustby rejected a season-best three each.
As an overall offense, the 119 points sets the Banghart record for the most in a game and the 76-margin of victory is the largest in her six seasons at the helm of the Tar Heels. 119 points also ties the most scored by an ACC team this season.
Continuing to shoot the three-ball at a high clip, the Tar Heels matched a season-best with 11 drained threes.
The Tar Heels remain at home, hosting a ranked Kentucky team for the SEC/ACC Challenge on Thursday from Carmichael Arena. The top-15 matchup will air on ESPN2 at 5 p.m. ET.
