WBB Faces Off With No. 1 South Carolina Sunday
March 23, 2024 | Women's Basketball
COLUMBIA, S.C. – On Sunday, the UNC women's basketball team will take on a No. 1 team for the third time in the past three seasons. In each of those cases, the opponent has been the same: South Carolina.
Â
Eighth-seeded North Carolina and top-seeded South Carolina will face off Sunday at 1 in an NCAA Tournament game at the Gamecocks' Colonial Life Arena. The game will air on ABC, and the winner gets a ticket to the NCAA Sweet 16 next weekend in Albany, N.Y.
Â
UNC advanced with a 59-56 win over ninth-seeded Michigan State on Friday. South Carolina blew out Presbyterian 91-39 to improve to 33-0 on the season.
Â
North vs. South
The Tar Heels and Gamecocks will face off Sunday for the 22nd time in program history and second time this season.
• The season's first matchup was on Nov. 30 in Chapel Hill, played in front of a sell-out crowd at Carmichael Arena. In the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge, the Tar Heels were up 29-26 at halftime and still held a lead midway through the third quarter before South Carolina took over and won the game 65-58.
• Prior to the November meeting, the two had faced off 12 times in a row at neutral sites.
• UNC and USC met in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2014, 2015 and 2022, with the Gamecocks winning two of three. Those are the only previous NCAA Tournament meetings.
• Sunday's game is the teams' first meeting in Columbia since the 1988-89 season, when the Gamecocks won 98-71. The two have never met at Colonial Life Arena.
Â
Tar Heels vs. No. 1
• Carolina is 3-28 all-time vs. teams ranked No. 1 in the AP poll.
• The last win over a No. 1 team was over Notre Dame in Chapel Hill on Jan. 27, 2019.
• The two No. 1 matchups since then have both been to South Carolina, one a loss in the 2022 Sweet 16 and the other this season's matchup.
