WBB Captains Earn All-ACC Honors
March 5, 2024 | Women's Basketball
North Carolina seniors Deja Kelly and Alyssa Ustby are team captains, the squad's leading scorers and now All-Atlantic Coast Conference honorees. The two were part of the 2023-24 conference honors announced Tuesday, with Kelly on the All-ACC first team and Ustby on the second team.
Both are starters for the Tar Heels (19-11, 11-7 ACC), who are seeded eighth in the 2024 ACC Tournament field and open play on Thursday with a second-round game. Tipoff against ninth-seeded Miami is 1:30 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Kelly earned first-team honors for the third year in a row. A guard from San Antonio, Texas, she leads UNC and ranks eighth in the ACC in scoring with 16.8 points per game, 17.8 in conference action. She recently became the 11th player in program history with 1,800 career points.
The all-conference nod is also a third for Ustby, who was on the first team last year and the second team as a sophomore. A guard/forward from Rochester, Minn., she ranks in the ACC's top 10 in rebounding (4th, 9.5), field goal percentage (6th, .47.7), blocks (9th, 1.33), steals (T10, 1.77) and assists (10th, 3.6). She's second on the team in points with 12.3 per game.
Virginia Tech's Elizabeth Kitley was named the ACC Player of the Year for the third year in a row, becoming just the third player in league history to win three times. Notre Dame freshman Hannah Hidalgo became the second player in league history to earn Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season, joining former Duke standout Elizbeth Williams in 2012.
Syracuse's Felisha Legette-Jack is the 2024 ACC Coach of the Year, while Duke freshman Oluchi Okananwa earned the ACC Sixth Player of the Year award. Pitt's Liatu King was named the Most Improved Player.
Tar Heel sophomore Indya Nivar, a guard from Apex, N.C., finished third in the voting for Sixth Player of the Year.
