March 8, 2024 | Track & Field
Junior Parker Wolfe secured silver in the 5000 meters, while the Tar Heel distance medley relay team finished fourth in a stellar Friday for the University of North Carolina at the 2024 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Wolfe and the DMR team were named First Team All-Americans. Wolfe is now a six-time All-American, while the Tar Heels' DMR team earns All-American status for the third time in four years. Alex Phillip, a graduate transfer from DIII John Carroll, finished 12th in the 5,000m, securing second-team All-American status.
Wolfe finished second in the 5,000m in a time of 13:27.37. He is the first Tar Heel medalist at the NCAA Indoor Championships since Mateo Sossah earned silver in the heptathlon in 2010. It was the best finish in the 5,000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships in school history. He is coming off the ACC Indoor Championship, where he was named MVP after victories in the mile and the 3000m, helping UNC win its first title since 1996. This was the first 5000m Wolfe competed in since he started the season by breaking the school record and running a 13:13.61 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Alex Phillip finished with a time of 13:43.
The DMR team of Aiden Neal, Andrew Regnier, Kyle Reinheimer, and Jake Gebhardt took fourth place with a time of 9:27.96.
Ethan Strand finished fifth in the mile preliminary on time, earning a trip to the final tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
Wolfe will compete tomorrow in the 3000m at 5:00 p.m., where he is the third seed and looks for another medal to become a seven-time All-American.
Carolina is currently tied for third in team points with 13.
