Four Tar Heels Collect All-ACC Honors
April 23, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Four University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players garnered All-ACC and All-Freshman honors, as announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference on Tuesday afternoon ahead of the ACC Tournament.
As voted on by the conference's 10 head coaches, the All-ACC first and second teams consist of three attackers, three midfielders, three defenders, one goalkeeper and six at-large bids. The All-Freshman Team is composed of the top 12 rookies regardless of position.
The Tar Heels' first team selection is Emily Nalls while Alyssa Long and Caitlyn Wurzburger both landed on the second team. GraceAnn Leonard earned a spot on the All-Freshman squad.
Recently named a top-25 nominee for the prestigious Tewaaraton Award for the second year in a row, Nalls – who has started all 86 games of her college career – leads the team with 53 draw controls, 29 ground balls and 24 caused turnovers. The graduate defender also garnered All-ACC First Team recognition a season ago in addition to IWLCA First Team All-America praise.
Now finding herself on the All-ACC Second Team in back-to-back years, Long has been a staple in the midfield and has amassed 28 goals, nine assists, 37 points and 28 draw controls so far this season. Her career performance of six goals and one assist against Virginia Tech earned her the ACC Offensive Player of the Week award on April 9, the first such honor of the senior's career.
Wurzburger has collected All-ACC Second Team honors for the third consecutive season. The senior attacker ranks second on the team with 46 points behind 26 goals and 20 assists, having matched her career-high seven points at Clemson. Her 247 career points rank fifth all-time in program history and her 114 career assists rank fourth.
Leonard, a midfielder, quickly made her presence known in Carolina blue. Despite suffering a season-ending injury, the freshman totaled nine goals, four assists and 13 points highlighted by a career-high four-point effort against High Point. She also had 42 draw controls and 14 ground balls and eight caused turnovers in her 13 appearances.
North Carolina, which checked in at No. 14 in the latest IWLCA poll, begins its quest for its eighth conference title on Wednesday, April 24, during the ACC Tournament in Charlotte.
