Round Two

Carlsbad, Calif. – Dylan Menante and Peter Fountain combined to shoot 1 over par Saturday to lead North Carolina in round two of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa's North Course.
The Tar Heels shot 8 over today and are 11-over 587 (291-296) after two rounds. Carolina is in fifth place and will be paired with Auburn (fourth at +10) and Ohio State (tied for sixth at +12) Sunday morning.
Virginia leads at 1-over 577 followed by Illinois (+4) and top-seeded Vanderbilt (+10).
Carolina came into the day in third place one shot behind and took the lead after a 7-under-par start through three-plus holes, but shot 8 over par on holes six through nine and 6 over on the back nine. The 8-over finish equaled the eighth-best round of the day. Only three teams shot under par (Vanderbilt was -2, Virginia and Illinois were both -1).
Menante made three birdies, three bogeys and made a 12-foot putt to save par on the 17th hole to shoot even-par 72.
Fountain, David Ford and Austin Greaser all were 2 under par early in their rounds. Fountain ended 1-over 73, Ford shot 75 and Greaser 76. Maxwell Ford shot 79.
Fountain (72-73) is tied for 15th in the individual standings and leads the Tar Heels at the mid-point of stroke play at 1-over 145. David Ford (71-75) is 2-over 146, Menante (78-72) is 6-over 150, Maxwell Ford (72-79) is 7-over 151 and Greaser (76-76) is 8-over 152.
"We did get off to a hot start and then the golf course kind of got us, and in some ways we got ourselves today with some decision-making or lack of commitment to certain shots," says head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "But that's this golf course. It's really hard and a difficult test right now. You can hit good shots and string together some birdies, then it can also get away from you pretty quickly.
"Our guys know exactly what they need to do. We need to stay in the moment and stay patient. Maybe simplify some things. If there's a conversation tonight, it's going to be about the golf course, about what we've learned about a brand-new golf course. You only have a practice round and two tournament rounds under your belt, so there's still a lot to learn about this golf course…where you can attack, maybe where you need to be a bit more conservative. So, it'll be more about how to try to pick this course apart, which is a pretty difficult test."
The top 15 of the 30 teams in the field after Sunday's third round advance to the fourth round of stroke play on Monday.
Stanford's Karl Vilips (69-68) is the individual leader at the halfway point at 7-under 137. He has a five-stroke advantage over Virginia's George Duangmanee and Ohio State's Adam Wallin.
