Levy, Team USA Set For U20 World Championships
August 14, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The United States Under-20 Women's National Team – which includes North Carolina lacrosse's own Kate Levy – is set to begin the 2024 World Lacrosse Women's U20 World Championship this week in Hong Kong.Â
The 10-day, 20-team tournament officially starts on Thursday, Aug. 15, with the United States opening pool play on Aug. 16. Opening ceremonies will be held Wednesday at Mong Kok Stadium, which will also be the site of the semifinals (Aug. 22) and championship games (Aug. 24).
Levy was named to the final 22-person roster in July after a series of training camps. She is one of just two incoming college freshmen representing the stars and stripes.Â
The reigning High School Girls' National Player of the Year, Levy was also selected as the Mid-Atlantic Girls' Player of the Year and Baltimore Sun's All-Metro Player of the Year. She is a two-time All-American.
The two-way midfielder from Chapel Hill spent her junior and senior year at McDonogh School in Maryland. She led the Eagles with 48 goals, 17 assists, 128 draws and 22 caused turnovers in 2024. Her 48 goals came on 76 shots – a 63-percent shooting percentage. She recorded 55 more draw controls than she did as a junior, solidifying herself as a force everywhere on the field.Â
The 2024 Women's U20 World Championship is the first world championship of any kind to be held in Asia since 1997 and the first World Lacrosse event to use the new under-20 age designation for junior-level competition.
Team USA has won five of seven women's junior world championships, reclaiming the gold medal five years ago in Ontario. Three former Tar Heels in Elizabeth Hillman ('23), Brooklyn Neuman ('23) and Caitlyn Wurzburger ('24) were on the team in 2019.Â
The United States enters the 2024 U-20 World Championship ranked No. 1 in the world.
