Canada, U.S. Finish Pool Play Undefeated At World Lacrosse Box Championships
September 24, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
UTICA, N.Y. – It's one step closer to historic gold for Canada and the United States, both which enter the playoffs of the 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships undefeated after finishing pool play 4-0.Â
It is the first time World Lacrosse has hosted a women's box world championship, and 10 teams have been competing in Utica, New York, since Sept. 20.Â
Current UNC redshirt-junior Brooklyn Walker-Welch is playing for Canada. One of the best defenders in NCAA Lacrosse, she has already put together quite the impressive international resume with her home country, highlighted by gold at The World Games in 2022.
Additionally, six former Tar Heels standouts are representing the United States: Kristen Carr ('10), Ally Mastroianni ('21), Taylor Moreno ('22), Melissa Sconone ('23), Caroline Wakefield ('21) and Kayla Wood ('21). No other school has more than two former student-athletes on the U.S. squad.
Team Canada topped Pool B after wins over Australia, Germany, Finland and Ireland. Team USA stands atop Pool A following victories against England, Haudenosaunee, China and Netherlands.Â
Following four games of pool play, Sconone leads the U.S. and ranks sixth in the tournament with 21 points behind 12 goals and nine assists. Moreno has made 21 saves and boasts a .810 save percentage.
Walker-Welch, a defender, has been crucial in helping Canada hold all four opponents scoreless so far. She even has one goal and three assists for four points.Â

Box lacrosse, also known as indoor lacrosse, is characterized by tight spaces, fast pace and quick decision making. Played inside the confines of a multi-sport rink, box lacrosse has a distinct set of rules apart from the field game. The playing surface is enclosed by boards, usually made of wood or plastic, and each team has six players on the floor – five runners and one goaltender. Players rotate on and off the floor in shifts.
