September 6, 2024 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Dominating from the first whistle, the UNC field hockey team out-shot Penn 25-3 to clinch a decisive 5-0 victory on Friday in the ACC-Ivy League Conference Crossover in Louisville.Â
Ryleigh Heck and Sietske Brüning both had two goals while Abigail Taylor made one save in Carolina's first shutout of the season. UNC improves to 3-0.Â
The Tar Heels got on the board at 8:40 in the first quarter after Heck's first goal of the year from the right post. UNC quickly doubled its lead just over a minute later when Pleun Lammers, also with her first of the season, scored off a rebound from a penalty corner.
A Penn no-goal was confirmed by officials at the start of the second quarter to preserve UNC's 2-0 lead. Carolina then tacked on another with 32 seconds remaining in the half when Brüning scored straight from a penalty corner with assists credited to Lammers and Katie Dixon.
UNC's 3-0 advantage at the break was its largest halftime lead so far this season.
Picking up right where they left off before the break, the Tar Heels extended their lead less than two minutes into the second half. Brüning scored her second of the day with a reverse stick shot from the left side of the cage, making it 4-0 at the end of the third.Â
Heck, the reigning NFHCA Division I National Player of the Year, found the back of the net again with 48:25 on the clock. Initially shot by Charly Bruder off a penalty corner, Heck was there for the rebound to give Carolina its fifth and final goal, sealing the first shutout of the 2024 campaign. Â
Next up for second-ranked Carolina is a game against Princeton, also part of the ACC-Ivy League Conference Crossover. The Tar Heels and Tigers will square off on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 11 a.m. ET in Louisville.Â
