Quick takeaways from the single game with BC this year.
By Adam Lucas
1. Wow. Carolina wins a shootout against Boston College, 102-96, in overtime.
2. Best news of the day: Jalen Washington appeared on the Tar Heel Sports Network after the game and said that although he was scared when the apparent injury happened because of his history with injuries, the more he put pressure on it the better it got. Washington had 18 points and six rebounds and it looked like the Tar Heels had lost him for an extended time--but he said he was ready to come back if needed until Carolina took control. Washington was a huge part of Carolina scoring 58 points in the paint and also hit two very key free throws in a completely silent Smith Center with 1:44 left in regulation to tie the game.
3. Drake Powell might have had the best five-point, three-rebound game of his life. Powell was the main reason why the Eagles couldn't get the ball in bounds during the end of regulation, even forcing a key five-second call on the baseline. The Tar Heel freshman was a team-high +13 and also had a highlight reel dunk in the first half.
4. Carolina needed the comeback because Boston College was red hot from three, hitting 14-of-24 from the arc. The Eagles made their most three-pointers in a game this season and shot their highest percentage from three this season. Dion Brown fouling out, with his four three-pointers and 20 points, was a big moment for them.
5. Encouraging signs from RJ Davis, who hit all four of his first half field goals and all four of his free throws on his way to 13 first-half points. He finished with 22, including a clutch three-pointer in overtime to give Carolina a three-point lead. Davis also made all eight of his free throws and had five assists.
6. Carolina altered the starting lineup, inserting Seth Trimble and Ven-Allen Lubin. Former starters Drake Powell and Jalen Washington entered at the 15:42 mark and also started the second half. Lubin sat for a long time in the second half due to foul trouble but came back to make a huge block in overtime.
7. Seth Trimble had a very solid all-around game, including a career-high 12 rebounds. He also made a big bucket in overtime to break a tie with 1:40 to play and scored 18 points. Ian Jackson added 19. It was a day when there were a lot of offensive highlights and not many defensive (until they were absolutely needed!).
8. The first half was not a good defensive effort. Boston College--a team ranked third from the bottom in offensive efficiency in the ACC in league games--shot 55.2 percent from the field. The Eagles normally make six three-pointers a game but hit five in the first half.Â
9. You might have noticed the unique shoes being worn by the Carolina coaches. They were part of the Shoes4Hope program, part of a partnership with Coaches vs Cancer (Carolina doesn't have a home game during the Coaches vs Cancer period next week). The shoes were custom painted by cancer patients at UNC Children's Hospital. Those shoes will be auctioned as a fundraiser.
10. Underrated player of the game: Ty Claude, whose energy helped change the game.
11. The Tar Heels have now won 18 of the last 19 games against the Eagles, including six straight. Thirteen of those 18 wins have been by double figures. The Smith Center crowd was a good part of that one. It didn't give up even when Carolina was struggling and was still around to make noise when the Tar Heels made the push late.
12. Reminder that with the expanded ACC, three teams won't qualify for the ACC Tournament this year. The Eagles now stand 1-8 in the league and are in danger of being one of those three teams. Miami, at 0-8 before Saturday's games, is also in serious danger. The Hurricanes come to Chapel Hill on March 1.Â
13. Now it gets tougher. On Tuesday, Carolina begins a four-game stretch that includes road games at Pitt and Duke, a home return date with Pitt and then a road trip at Clemson. Entering Saturday's games, those three teams are 44-12 overall and 19-5 in the ACC. Those three teams are all in the top 33 of the KenPom ratings (Carolina is 32nd). The Heels are 1-6 against teams that fall into that category and 12-2 against everyone else.
