Athletics Celebrates Men’s Lacrosse And Women’s Swimming & Diving For Academic Excellence

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In honor of stellar years in the classroom, both North Carolina Men's Lacrosse and Women's Swimming & Diving were honored with the Carolina Academic Excellence Award – given each year to the men's and women's varsity teams with the highest overall grade point averages.
An idea created by UNC alumni Dan Rupp, the award and dinner celebrate the teams with for their academic performance as well as provide the opportunity for fellowship.
The teams were also presented with the Old Well Trophy, which each team and academic counselor keep for the year.
This year marked a special occasion and both men's lacrosse and women's swimming & diving earned the award for the first time. The award was originally founded following the 2017-18 academic year.
The two teams along with coaches and members of the Academic Support Program, gathered at the Carolina Inn on Oct. 14 in celebration.
On the field, men's lacrosse reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2021. In the water, women's swimming & diving sent 14 qualifiers to NCAA's to place 17th overall.
