March 24, 2025 | Track & Field
NEW ORLEANS – Senior Ethan Strand was named the 2025 NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track & Field National Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Monday.
Strand is the first Tar Heel to win the national award for track and field. Shalane Flanagan won the award for cross country in 2002 and 2003.
Strand opened the season by setting two NCAA records in his first two races of the year. He is the only student-athlete to set the NCAA record in the mile (3:48.32) and the 3000m (7:30.15) in the same year.
Strand won the ACC title in the men's 5000m, setting the meet record (13:26.60). Strand was part of the national runner-up DMR squad that set an unratified American Indoor Record (9:17.17), earning first-team All-American honors. He followed that up by winning the national championship in the men's 3000m (7:52.03).
