Duke Tops Women's Tennis, 4-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.— The fourth-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team fell to No. 9 Duke, 4-2, in Atlantic Coast Conference play on Wednesday at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Duke improved to 15-2 overall and 7-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the victory. Carolina fell to 15-4, 6-1.
The Tar Heels opened the match with a 2-1 victory in doubles to take the doubles point. Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton topped 13th-ranked Elizabeth Coleman and Irina Balus at No. 1, 6-2, to start the afternoon. After Duke won at No. 3, the ninth-ranked duo of Carson Tanguilig and Susanna Maltby clinched it with a 6-4 win at No. 2.
Brantmeier was the lone Tar Heel to come out victorious in the singles portion of the match, taking down No. 12 Irina Balus in straight sets. The Blue Devils picked up singles wins at No. 3 over Tanguilig, No. 2 over Theadora Rabman, No. 5 over Hamilton and No. 6 over Claire Hill.
The Tar Heels have a quick turnaround before their next home match, a Friday afternoon tilt with new Atlantic Coast Conference member SMU at 2 p.m. at the Chewning Tennis Center.
