Baseball Secures Series With Saturday Win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A big two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth delivered a 4-2 victory for North Carolina over the visitors Miami on Saturday afternoon in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The Tar Heels (21-6, 6-5 ACC) got four runs off a Miami error and three straight singles to claim their second straight ACC series. It is the first time UNC has won the weekend against the Hurricanes since head coach Scott Forbes' first season in 2021.
Â
Division III Montclair State transfer Sam Angelo started the inning off with his second single of the afternoon. Sawyer Black, Luke Stevenson, Hunter Stokely, and Gavin Gallaher followed, all with two outs, to drive in all of Carolina's runs for the day in that one frame.
Â
Angelo struggled at the plate in the early part of his transition to the Division I level, but has slowly started to get his bat going. In Carolina's last three games, he leads the team with a .500 BA and five hits to go along with two runs and two RBIs.
Â
Sophomore Jason DeCaro picked up his fourth win of the year in another solid outing in the friendly confines of the Bosh. He went 5.1 IP, picking up six strikeouts while only giving up three hits and one walk.
Â
The weekend starters continue to be a strength of this Tar Heel team. In their last seven games, the Carolina starters are averaging just 3.2 hits, 1.1 earned runs, and 1.2 walks per game all the while racking up 50 strikeouts (7.1 per game).
Â
Great starters are nothing without great relievers to back them up and true freshman Ryan Lynch was fantastic once again on Saturday. From the New Yorker DeCaro to the Jersey kid, Â Lynch went to work in 3.2 innings pitching a shutout with only one hit and one walk. He added three strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 1.46, the lowest of any of the Tar Heels coming out of the bullpen.
Â
Carolina will return to the Bosh one more time on the weekend on Sunday looking for their first ACC sweep of the season. First pitch has been moved up to noon in an attempt to avoid some potential weather on Sunday night.
