Four Tar Heels Added To Tewaaraton Award Watch List
March 6, 2025 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Four North Carolina women's lacrosse players have been added to the 2025 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, as announced by the organization on Thursday. Sam Forrest, Ashley Humphrey, Chloe Humphrey and Betty Nelson have joined 10 other standouts as mid-season additions.
They are accompanied by Brooklyn Walker-Welch and Marissa White, who were both tabbed to the initial watch list in February. Carolina's six honorees lead the nation.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse players in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
Forrest, a defender, has played a key role in limiting opponents to just 4.5 goals per game and not allowing double-digit goals thus far. She leads the roster with 10 ground balls and ranks second with seven caused turnovers through six games. The redshirt junior scored her first career goal at Liberty on Feb. 9.
The long-awaited debut of C. Humphrey – the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2023 before an injury sidelined her rookie campaign – has not disappointed. The redshirt freshman attacker tops the Tar Heels' lineup with 24 goals, having netted a career-high six goals and eight points against Temple on March 4. She has had at least three points in every game.
Joining her younger sister on the updated watch list is A. Humphrey, an attacker whose 18 assists and 31 points leads the team. She currently ranks 12th all-time in school history with 56 career assists, a feat she achieved in just 22 games at UNC. She recorded a season-high nine points behind three goals and six assists at Florida on Feb. 15.
Nelson has anchored Carolina's lockdown defense between the pipes, boasting a .579 save percentage which ranks first in the ACC and third in the NCAA. The sophomore goalie's 5.05 goals-against average also ranks first in the conference and second nationally. She made a career-high nine saves against the Orange last month.
The Tar Heels return to action on Saturday, March 8, against No. 14 Virginia in a big ACC matchup. First draw is set for 2:30 p.m. ET and tickets can be purchased here.
