Heels Run Wild in Win Over Stanford
March 8, 2025 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A season-high four home runs propelled North Carolina to a run-rule 11-1 victory over Stanford in seven innings on Saturday afternoon.
The Tar Heels (14-1, 1-1 ACC) put together a convincing response to their first loss of the season, scoring 11 runs on 12 hits with no errors to even the series and set up a Sunday rubber match.
Captain Jake Knapp threw his first career complete game in a career-long 7.0 innings to keep the Heels in the driver's seat all afternoon. The veteran racked up seven strikeouts with only one walk, one run, and four hits on 111 total pitches.
Sophomore Luke Stevenson powered the offensive attack for Carolina on Saturday. His third career multi-home run game, the Wake Forest native took a solo shot in the first before clobbering a two-run 448 footer into Karen Shelton Stadium in the fourth.
He finished the day 4-for-4, adding an RBI single and a walk to a perfect day at the plate.
Reigning ACC Player of the Week Hunter Stokely got in on the action with a long ball of his own in the bottom of the fifth. It was his third opposite field homer of the year after only having one in his three previous seasons combined.
After today's game, the pair are tied at a team-leading five home runs on the year. Stokely's previous best in a single season was six in 2023.
Catcher Macaddin Dye, operating in the designated hitter position, smoked his first homer in a Carolina uniform in the bottom of the seventh to set up Gavin Gallaher for his second walk-off hit of the week. It is UNC's first run rule win of the season and the first in ACC play since the final game of the Miami series last season.
Carolina's other captain Jackson Van De Brake has quietly had an incredible week at the plate. In the Tar Heels' last five games, he leads the team in batting average (.563) with nine hits, six walks, five runs scored, and two doubles. He kept it going on Saturday, going 2-2 with a pair of runs and a pair of walks.
The Tar Heels will be in the Bosh on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET for the deciding game in the series. Carolina has won six of its last eight conference weekends.
