SLOW ROASTED TURKEY ON EASTER SUNDAY
➤ Carolina traveled north over the weekend to face off with Virginia Tech and came away with their fifth straight ACC series win thanks to victories on Friday and Sunday in Blacksburg.Â
➤ Captain Jake Knapp picked up his eighth win of the season in game one, going 5.1 IP with seven strikeouts and only two walks. Walker McDuffie followed in relief and added six Ks of his own in picking up his fourth save.Â
➤ The Heels were efficient in high-leverage situations on that Friday night, adding four of their runs with two outs and going 4-for-12 with runners in scoring position.Â
➤ A contentious affair on Saturday went to the Hokies, who hit five homers as UNC gave up double digit runs for just the third time this season.Â
➤ The bounce back was big for the boys in Carolina blue on Easter Sunday however. Virginia Tech took an early lead before seven unanswered runs for the Heels put them back in the driver's seat.Â
➤ UNC had 10 hits and nine walks in game three of the series, the sixth time this year the team has eclipsed both of those marks in the same game. The team is undefeated when doing so.Â
➤ Getting hot at the right time, UNC has reached double digit hits in eight of its last nine. It had only done so 14 times in the 31 games prior.
YOUNG BUCKS BRING THE HEAT
➤ Carolina has called upon three true freshman arms to deliver in big spots this season.Â
➤ First to appear was the Lee County legend Walker McDuffie. He has thrown 17 times, striking out 47 batters, earning three wins, and logging four saves.Â
➤ His save was the first by a Carolina true freshman since Shawn Rapp's against Elon on Feb. 18, 2020.
➤ Ellerbe, N.C. native Camron Seagraves has 12 appearances and the only one of the trio to get a start thus far. He has recorded a win and 21 Ks.
➤ Punching out two to finish off history, he is the first freshman on record to be involved in a UNC no-hitter.Â
➤ Flamethrower Ryan Lynch currently holds the lowest ERA of the regular relievers at 2.50. He recently picked up his first career save and now has two.
➤ It is the first time UNC has had multiple freshmen with saves in a season since 2018 and the first time they've had multiple freshmen with more than one save since at least 1997.Â
➤ The last true freshman Heel to record more than one save in a season was Trent Thornton who had eight in 2013.Â
➤ Lynch's seven strikeouts were the most by a Carolina pitcher in their collegiate debut since Max Carlson racked up eight on Feb. 20, 2021.Â
➤ The trio, alongside the young Jason Decaro, own 12 of the Tar Heels' 31 wins so far this year. Lynch is the oldest of the group while DeCaro, the sophomore, is the youngest player on the team.Â
ARM TALENT
➤ The Tar Heels' staff leads the ACC in a number of categories including ERA (3.57, 7th NCAA), strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.67, 20th NCAA), WHIP (1.22, 9th NCAA), and walks allowed per nine (3.54, 25th NCAA).
➤ Carolina's starters are all over the ACC leader boards, leading the conference game only lists in at least five categories.
➤ Knapp has been particularly brilliant, pacing the conference in ERA (1.66), OBA (.173), IP (48.2), strikeouts (45), and wins (7).
➤ UNC's three starters sit at 1st, 3rd, and 9th on the innings pitched list. No other school has more than one in the top-10.
➤ The duo of Knapp and Haugh are 1st and 4th in opp. batting average.Â
➤ UNC put up games with 17 and 14 strikeouts back-to-back twice in week two alone. The last time the team had 14+ Ks in back-to-back games more than once in the same season was 2008.
NO PLACE LIKE THE BOSH
➤ The Tar Heels boasted a 37-3 record at Boshamer Stadium last season, winning a program record 92.5 percent of its games at home.
➤ The previous highest complete season winning percentage at Boshamer Stadium was 92.3 in 2011 (36-3) and 1985 (24-2).
4UNC opened the season with 23 consecutive wins before suffering its first home loss (4/16 vs. Coastal Carolina), setting a program record for most consecutive home wins to start a season.
4The 23 victories were a part of a school record 27 straight wins at Boshamer Stadium, including the final four games of the 2023 campaign.
➤ Only Tennessee (40) had more home wins than the Tar Heels in 2024, and only UC Santa Barbara and Oregon State had fewer losses (2).
➤ It was the 13th time in program history the Tar Heels won 30 or more home games.
➤ The Tar Heels have won 77.3 percent of their home games since 2021, going 133-39.
NON-CON COMBAT
➤ The Heels have compiled a 94-31 (.752) record in games against non-ACC opponents under Forbes. The 2024 team was 24-6 outside of conference play.
➤ Since 2020, UNC has won 11 of its 12 three-game non-conference weekend series with a 29-6 mark in that span.
It is actually the first ever all-time meeting between the two programs, adding one more team to the record books. The Blue Hose are the 236th different opponent Carolina has faced in its history. UNC has now faced all but one members of the current Big South conference, USC Upstate.Â
