CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina women's lacrosse placed the maximum of eight Tar Heels on this year's All-ACC teams, the league announced on Tuesday. Sam Forrest, Ashley Humphrey, Chloe Humphrey and Brooklyn Walker-Welch claimed first-team honors, while Betty Nelson, Eliza Osburn and Olivia Vergano were named second team. Sophie Student joined the group on the third team.
Forrest, a junior defender from Glastonbury, Conn., is one of the key cogs in Carolina's top-ranked defense. She is often assigned UNC opponent's top scorer and has done a masterful job this season keeping them in check. Forrest is a Tewaaraton Award Nominee, an Inside Lacrosse Midseason Honorable Mention All-American and a two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Week. On the year, Forrest has tallied 15 groundballs, 14 caused turnovers and four draw controls for a defense that is allowing just 6.13 goals per game. The Heels 92 goals allowed is by far the fewest allowed in the nation this year.
A graduate student from Darien, Conn., Ashley Humphrey is the top playmaker in the country. A three-time All-American, she currently leads the Tar Heels in points with 84, which is tied for eighth nationally. She's tallied 61 assists and 23 goals on the year to accumulate her 84 points. Ashley's 61 assists and 4.07 assists per game lead the nation and rank third on UNC's single-season list. A Tewaaraton Award Nominee, Inside Lacrosse Midseason First-Team All-American, National Player of the Week honoree and two-time ACC Player of the Week this season, she is the NCAA's active leader in assists (229) and assists per game (3.37) and ranks third in points per game (5.00).
Freshman phenom Chloe Humphrey is widely considered the nation's most dynamic young attacker, having scored 64 goals to go along with 18 assists for 82 points. Her 64 goals are tied for third nationally and her 82 points rank 10th. Chloe has scored six goals four times this season and has tallied hat tricks in 12 of the first 15 games of her collegiate career. A Tewaaraton Award Nominee, Inside Lacrosse Midseason Second-Team All-American, National Player of the Week and two-time ACC Player of the Week this season, she is one of the main reasons UNC ranks second nationally in scoring offense at 17.67 goals per game.
Walker-Welch, a junior defender from Courtice, Ontario, is a two-time All-American and the general of UNC's top-ranked defense. After missing last season due to injury, she returned as ILWomen's top-ranked defender on its preseason Top 50 list and made the Tar Heels one of, if not, the toughest teams to attack. A Tewaaraton Award Nominee, Inside Lacrosse Midseason First-Team All-American and ACC Defensive Player of the Week, Walker-Welch has collected 21 groundballs this season to go along with 14 caused turnovers for a defense that is allowing just 6.13 goals per game. The Heels 92 goals allowed is by far the fewest allowed in the nation this year. This is Walker-Welch's second consecutive All-ACC first team honor.
A redshirt freshman from Littleton, Colo., Nelson has been a stalwart in goal all season. She's played 669 minutes and made 82 saves on 247 shots for a 51.6 save percentage, which ranks third nationally. Nelson's 6.91 goals against average leads the country and her 72 goals allowed are the fewest in the nation. She was a member of the Tewaaraton Award Watch List and earned Inside Lacrosse Midseason Second-Team All-America honors.
Freshman Eliza Osburn, a Castle Rock, Colo. native, has turned in an outstanding freshman season in midfield. Osburn has scored 21 goals and dished out five assists for 26 points to support the nation's second-ranked offense. She's also tallied 32 draw controls, nine groundballs and five caused turnovers to assist the country's top-ranked defense.
A West Babylon, N.Y. native, senior Olivia Vergano has been an offensive force for the Tar Heels during her first season in Chapel Hill. A preseason ILWomen Top 20 Impact Transfer, Vergano has been just that, posting 29 goals and 11 assists for 40 points on the season. The 40 points rank third on the team. In addition, she's grabbed 10 groundballs, six draw controls and caused one turnover.
Sophie Student, a graduate student from Hopkinton, Mass., has seen her play flourish in the midfield throughout the spring. Student earned a starting spot in early March after recovering from an injury that caused her to miss 2024 and hasn't looked back. She's amassed 31 draw controls, 15 groundballs and four caused turnovers on the year, while assisting the nation's top-ranked defense. Student was named ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week after tallying a career-high six groundballs against Boston College.
