David Cason is in his second season at the University of North Carolina as the Director of Basketball Operations.
Last year, the Tar Heels won 26 games, earned a No. 1 national ranking late in the regular season, posted a 13-3 league record and won a share of the ACC regular-season championship, advanced to the ACC Tournament finals, and were the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament South Regional.
He came to Chapel Hill in July 2000 after serving one year in a similar position at Notre Dame under Matt Doherty. Prior to joining the Fighting Irish, he served for three seasons as an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois University.
In his one season on Doherty’s staff at Notre Dame, the Irish posted a 22-15 record and earned a berth in the NIT championship game.
Cason is a 1996 graduate of Illinois State and played for the Redbirds from 1993-95. He led the Missouri Valley Conference in assists in both seasons. In his senior season, Cason served as team captain and helped lead Illinois State to a 20-13 record and a second-round appearance in the NIT. He was named second-team All-Missouri Valley, received the Doug Collins Award, given to the team’s Most Valuable Player, and was named the top athlete at Illinois State.
He began his coaching career the following year as a student assistant to head coach Kevin Stallings.
He played his first two years of college basketball (1991-93) at the College of Southern Idaho. Cason led the Scenic West Conference in assists for two seasons and was named second-team all-region.
A native of Baltimore, Md., and a graduate of Southern High School, Cason was born on Aug. 12, 1972. He earned first-team all-city honors on two occasions. He was married to the former Tamara J. Motley in August 2001.
