As a Junior:
Made two official appearances and four exhibition appearances for the Tar Heels, all on beam • Topped her personal best in the last meet of the regular season against Pitt with a score of 9.825 • Earned Dean’s List honors at UNC • Named to the NACGC/W Academic All-America Team • Earned All-EAGL Scholastic Team honors for a third year in a row.
As a Sophomore:
Participated in five meets with exhibition performances on beam • Set a new career-high on beam against Florida with a score of 9.800 • Earned EAGL Academic Honors for the second year in a row.
As a Freshman:
Did not compete due to a season-ending injury prior to joining the team in Chapel Hill, N.C. • Earned a 4.0 GPA during the fall semester • Named to the All-EAGL Scholastic Team.
Prep:
Trained at Gym South Gymnastics in 2012 and the Newman School of Gymnastics from 2013 to 2015 • Attended Whitewater High School in Fayetteville, Ga. • Placed third on the floor exercise at the state championships in 2012 • Notched a third place finish on the balance beam at the state championships in 2013 • Named the Most Dedicated Gymnast at her club in 2012 and Most Improved Gymnast in 2013 • During 2014, she earned a first place finish in the all-around competition at the Ozone Invitational and Courtney Kupets Pink Invitational and second place in the Paws for a Cause Invitational • Notched a fourth place finish on the balance beam at the regional championships in 2014 • Named the Most Valuable and Most Artistic Gymnast at her club in 2014.
Personal:
Born Jamie Patricia DeCicco in Port Jefferson, N.Y., on Aug. 10, 1997 • Daughter of Christine and Daniel DeCicco • Valedictorian of her class • Undergraduate Research Fellow at the Matthew Gfeller Sports-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center in Chapel Hill • Served as the president of Beta Club and National Honor Society • Youth volunteer at Piedmont Fayette Hospital • Member of the Science National Honor Society • Was the secretary of the Math Team in high school • Officer of Health Occupational Students of America, and won first place at state competition for health education • Served as her yearbook’s copy editor • Was a peer editor for math and science in high school • At the state science fair, she won fourth place and earned the Most Innovative Engineering Award • Has a younger brother (age 13) and younger sister (age 16) • Her parents are accomplished marathon runners, and competed in last year’s New York Marathon.

What is the best thing about being at UNC? The relationship I’ve formed, being a part of Athletes in Action with my brothers and sisters in Christ and getting to do gymnastics while pursing my career goals
Away from gymnastics and my academic pursuits, I like to spend time… with family and friends, serving others, hiking and cooking
My greatest strength as a gymnast is… my attention to detail and work ethic
Biggest sports thrill and why? Watching the UNC basketball team win the 2017 National Championship!
Person who had the greatest influence on your career and why: My club coach, Crick Shelnutt, because he always believes in me, helps and cares about me beyond compare and treats me like his daughter
Favorite Book: Grit by Angela Duckworth
Favorite Food: Greek yogurt
Funny or interesting fact about yourself: I am an undergraduate research fellow in the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center.
Favorite class at UNC and why: Organic chemistry - I formed close relationships with my professors and classmates and I really enjoyed the material
At what age did you first start participating in gymnastics and what is your earliest memory of gymnastics? Age 7 – my best friend and I wore matching fairy velvet leotards to our first class
The funniest nickname on the team belongs to: Mekyllah Williams (Swags)
What song would you sing if you were on The Voice? Happiness by NEEDTOBREATHE
What reality show would you most like to be on? Fixer Upper
My favorite guilty pleasure is: Dark chocolate and ice cream
