Josh Dionne (pronounced “DYE-on”) joined the University of North Carolina women’s lacrosse staff in July of 2016 as an assistant coach. He works with the Tar Heel offense and midfield.
The Tar Heel offense had a record-breaking season under Dionne’s guidance in 2018: Carolina set new school records for most goals, assists and points in a season, while Katie Hoeg, Jamie Ortega, Marie McCool and Ela Hazar posted four of the top six scoring totals in UNC history.
Dionne, a two-time All-America attacker and NCAA champion as a player at Duke, served as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at the United States Naval Academy for two seasons before coming to Chapel Hill.
While on staff at Navy in 2015 and 2016 for Cindy Timchal, the winningest head coach in NCAA women’s lacrosse history, Dionne coached the offensive unit and had an active role in recruiting. The Midshipmen went 28-11 in his two seasons in Annapolis, including 15-5 in 2015 and 13-6 in 2016. Dionne helped Loren Generi become the first player in NCAA history to accumulate at least 300 points, 200 goals and 400 draw controls in a career. Generi compiled career highs with 86 points on 57 goals and 29 assists in 2015 under Dionne’s tutelage.
As a player, Dionne helped lead Duke to back-to-back NCAA championships in 2013 and 2014. He was a two-time USILA All-America attacker and a four-year letterman with the Blue Devils who tallied 162 points on 140 goals and 22 assists in 78 career games. He was selected 18th overall in the 2014 Major League Lacrosse Draft by the Charlotte Hounds.
Dionne began his coaching career in the summer of 2011 with the New England Select team (a squad of 14 to 16-year old players).
He graduated from Duke in 2014 with a bachelor of arts degree in history.
