Tar Heel Golf Teams Earn National Rankings

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina's women's golf team is tied with Southern California for the top spot in the latest (through Oct. 4) Golfweek/Taylor Made Rankings. Michigan State is ranked third, Florida State and Texas Christian are tied for the fourth spot while Duke, Tulsa and Georgia are tied for the sixth spot.
The Tar Heels captured the championship of the Lady Seminole Invitational in their first outing of the fall campaign and were the runners-up at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational. In the Lady Seminole, junior Marcy Newton was the runner-up in the individual race with a four-under-par 212 total. Sophomore Shelley McKevitt was one shot back in third place while freshman Heather Angell tied for 10th place with a 221 total. Angell finished ninth in the Lady Tar Heel finishing strong with a five-under 67 in the final round. McKevitt tied for 10th place while Newton tied for 14th place.
North Carolina's men's team is ranked 11th in the Golfweek/Taylor Made Rankings. Clemson holds down the number one spot while Oklahoma State is second, Georgia Tech and Arizona State are tied for the third spot, Florida is ranked fifth and a trio of teams are tied for the sixth spot -- Maryland, Texas and Minnesota.
The Tar Heels captured the team title at the Keswick Club Cavalier Classic after placing 10th at The Ridges Intercollegiate, their first outing of the year. Junior Brad Hyler won his first tournament as a Tar Heel after transferring from Virginia Tech winning individual medalist honors with an 11-under 202 total at the Keswick Club Cavalier Classic. Senior Don Hill was the runner-up with a 205 total while junior Max Harris tied for eighth place at 210 after firing a seven-under 64 in the final round. Hill tied for 14th place at The Ridges Intercollegiate.
North Carolina's men's team has recently been selected to participate in the Rolex National Intercollegiate Match Play Team Championships to be played Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Indian River Club in Vero Beach, Fla. The other participating teams in the men's bracket are Arizona, Arizona State, Clemson, Georgia, Houston, South Carolina and Texas Christian.
