Men's Golf in Seventh at NCAA Championship

CHASKA, Minn. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team carded a 307 for a 601 total and stands in seventh place after the second round of the NCAA Championships. The course, Hazeltine National Golf Club, played tough on Thursday as 297 was the low team score by the Clemson Tigers who grabbed the second-round lead with a 590 total. Brigham Young is one shot back at 591 while UNLV is third at 593, Northwestern is fourth at 297 and Georgia and first-round leader Oklahoma State are tied for fifth place with 297 totals.
The Tar Heels, ranked 17th, were one of 15 teams to advance on as the field was cut after the second round to the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals not on one of those 15 teams. Carolina and Clemson were the only ACC teams to survive as Duke tied for 18th place and Georgia Tech, ranked third in the nation, finished in 28th place. Matt Krauss of Duke did garner one of the individual spots and will thus complete the final two rounds.
Luke Donald of Northwestern leads all individuals as he fired a four-under-par 68 despite windy conditions and stands at three-under 141. Derek Gillespie of Arizona and Chris Wisler of East Tennessee State are two shots back and tied for second place at 143 while Illinois' D.A. Points and UNLV's Charley Hoffman are tied for fourth place at 144 and Carolina's Max Harris (Worthing, England), Clemson's Lucas Glover and Brigham Young's Manuel Merizalde are knotted in sixth place with 145 totals. A trio of players are tied for ninth place with 146 totals -- Carolina's Don Hill (Mount Olive, N.C.), Clemson's Jonathan Byrd and Washington's Troy Kelly.
Carolina's Brad Hyler (Raleigh, N.C.) carded a 154 and is tied for 65th place while Rob Simmons posted a 162 and is tied for 138th and Paul Daniel carded a 163 and is tied for 142nd place.
The 72-hole event continues through Saturday and is being played at the Hazeltine National Golf Club, which features a par 72, 7,196-yard layout.
