UNC's Harris Finishes Sixth at NCAAs

CHASKA, Minn. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team carded a 302 for a 1201 total and finished in 10th place at the NCAA Championships, Carolina's 13th top 10 finish in school history. Georgia won the team title with an 1180 total. Oklahoma State was the runner up finishing three strokes back at 1183. Northwestern finished third at 1188 while Washington finished fourth at 1189 and Arizona State fifth at 1192. Clemson, the only other ACC team to survive the 36-hole cut tied for eighth place with an 1199 total.
Luke Donald of Northwestern captured the individual title with a four-under par 284 total after carding a one-under 71 on the final day. Georgia's Ryuji Imada and Washington's Troy Kelly finished three shots back and tied for second place with 287 totals while Arizona State's Paul Casey finished fourth at 290 and Oklahoma State's Charles Howell finished fifth at 291.
North Carolina was the only team to have two players finish in top 10 and three players finish in the top 20 as junior Max Harris (Worthing, England) tied for sixth place with a 294 total after posting a 77 in the final round, senior Don Hill (Mount Olive, N.C.) finished 10th at 296 after carding a 73 on Saturday and junior Brad Hyler (Raleigh, N.C.) tied for 16th place with a 299 total, posting an even par 72 in the final round. Junior Paul Daniel (Burlington, N.C.) carded a 319 total and tied for 77th place while sophomore Rob Simmons (Walterboro, S.C.) carded a 330 total and finished in 83rd place.
The Tar Heels, ranked 17th nationally, were one of 15 teams to advance when the field was cut after Thursday's second round to the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals not on one of those teams. The 72-hole event was played at the Hazeltine National Golf Club, which features a par 72, 7,196-yard layout.
