Despite an 18-point scoring effort from UNC's LaQuanda Barksdale, the U.S. World University Games team lost its first game of the competition Wednesday, 81-70 to the Ukraine. The U.S. finished pool play 2-1 and will play Lithuania Friday in the quarterfinals. The medal games are scheduled for Monday, July 12.
The U.S. led 16-7 with 13:31 remaining in the first half, but had fallen behind 40-35 by halftime. With a run early in the second half, the U.S. claimed a 49-44 lead with 13:56 to play. The teams exchanged the advantage five more times before the Ukraine took over with seven minutes to play.
Barksdale was 8-for-13 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from three-point range. Purdue's Katie Douglas scored 15 points and Florida State's Brooke Wyckoff led the U.S. in rebounds with eight. For the game, the U.S. shot 38.9 percent and turned the ball over 25 times.
"We're thinking about our mistakes and thinking about what we can do to get ready for the next game," Barksdale said. "There's a chance that we could meet that team again so we need to get our heads back together. We talked about it in the lockerroom after the game, about all the things we did wrong. We played soft, we had too many turnovers. It wasn't really big things that made us lose the game, it was the little things and those can be addressed."
