Men's Golf In Fifth After First Round At Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team stands in fifth place with a nine-under-par team total of 279 after the first round of play at the Rolex/Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational. Georgia leads the 18-team field after firing a first round tournament record total of 20-under-par 268. The Bulldogs are followed by Oklahoma State at 274, South Carolina at 277, Georgia Tech at 278, and North Carolina at 279.
The individual leader is Arizona's Cody Beyer who carded a 7-under-par 65. Following Beyer are Erik Compton of Georgia and Anders Hultman of Oklahoma State who each fired scores of 66.
North Carolina golfers Dustin Bray and Richard Treis are both in a 13-way tie for 12th position after each shooting a 3-under-par 69. Senior Rob Simmons fired a two-under-par 70 and is tied for 25th. Sophomore Ramon Bescansa and Senior John Harris both turned in a 71, good for a nine-way tie for 36th.
The event continues through Sunday and is being played at the Arthur Hills Golf Course at Palmeeto Dunes, which features a par 72, 6,651-yard layout.
