WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sophomore All-American attacker Erin Elbe (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) scored a hat trick and tallied an assist to lead the sixth-ranked Georgetown University Hoyas to a 14-4 upset victory over the fifth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in women's lacrosse action on Saturday, April 8, on Kehoe Field. The win improves Georgetown's record to 8-3, while Carolina falls to 7-4 on the season.
The Hoyas dominated the first half, starting the game on a 6-0 run before Carolina could respond. The first GU goal came at 25:48 when Elbe shook off two Tar Heel defenders and fired one into the bottom of the net. Elbe then set up junior midfielder Sarah Oglesby (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) for the score at the 21:16 mark to put the Hoyas up 2-0. Junior All-American midfielder Sheehan Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) increased the GU lead to three when she struck with 16:22 on the clock. Oglesby made it 4-0 a minute later with an unassisted goal, and Stanwick 5-0 with her second goal of the day at 11:37. Senior midfielder Kristen Baer (Norristown, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) slipped past a UNC defender to score at 8:37 to give Georgetown a 6-0 advantage.
Christine McPike finally put the Tar Heels on the scoreboard with 3:04 on the clock. The first half ended with the Hoyas enjoying a 6-1 lead.
Georgetown came out strong the second half. Sophomore attacker Kate Ahearn's (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) shot was successful on a free position opportunity at 28:14 to push the GU lead to six (7-1). Thirteen seconds later senior midfielder Susan Stewart (Wyndmoor, Pa./Springfield) found the back of the net to make the score 8-1.
Carolina answered by scoring two consecutive goals. Betsy Gaines came up with an unassisted goal at the 27:44 mark, then Amy Havrilla took a feed from Kellie Thompson with 20:56 on the clock to give the Tar Heels their third goal of the day to within five (8-3).
The Hoyas bounced back by capitalizing on two free position shots. Junior midfielder Caitlin McLean's (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) free position shot from eight meters out at the 18:22 mark was successful, as was Ahearn's at 16:07.
North Carolina fought back by scoring the next two goals. Eden Rellihan won the ensuing draw and raced down the field to notch an unassisted goal with 13:57 to play to make it a six-point game at 10-4. Lindsay Stone made it 10-5 at the 13:41 mark.
Georgetown answered with back-to-back goals to take a 12-5 lead. Junior midfielder Reagan Raneri (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park) recorded the first goal at 11:27, while Elbe registered the second at 10:40. Sheehan Stanwick was credited with an assist on Elbe's goal. UNC's Stone stepped up with her second goal of the day at the 9:20 mark for a 12-6 score. Elbe tallied her third, and the Hoyas' last, goal of the day at 6:16 to give Georgetown a 13-6 edge.
Two minutes later, Gray McNair's free position shot was good. It would be the last score of the game, giving the Hoyas a 13-7 victory over the Tar Heels.
Junior Bowen Holden (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) had a solid game for the Hoyas in the goal cage. She rejected 15 UNC shots on the day, including five free position shots, while allowing only seven goals. Freshman Margaret Garofalo and sophomore Melissa Coyne split time in goal for North Carolina. Garofalo made two saves and allowed six goals, while Coyne turned away three GU shots and allowed seven goals. Carolina outshot the Hoyas 23-20, however the Hoyas 12-9 advantage in draws.
Carolina returns to action on Thursday in Baltimore versus Penn State.
