Carolina Men's Golf In Tie For 13th At NCAA East Regional

MOOSIC, Pa. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team is in 13th place with a 301 total after the first round of the NCAA East Regional. First-round play was completed Friday morning after several rain delays on Thursday forced suspension of play due to darkness with nine teams left stranded on the course. East Tennessee State leads the field of 27 teams after firing a seven-over-par 291 total. Clemson is one shot back in second place at 292. Virginia and Mississippi State are tied for third at 293 while N.C. State and Wake Forest are tied for fifth place with 294 totals.
There are four players tied for the individual lead after all fired two-under 69 totals - Carl Pettersson of N.C. State, James Driscoll of Virginia, Matt Borchert of North Florida and Michael Morrison of Georgia. A trio of players are one shot back at 70 - Clemson's Jonathan Byrd and Lucas Glover and East Tennessee State's Thomas Lee.
Carolina was led by senior Max Harris who fired a 73 and is tied for 20th place. Whitten Meares carded a 75 and is tied for 47th place while Rob Simmons posted a 76 and is tied for 58th place, Paul Daniel shot 77 and is tied for 72nd place and Brad Hyler shot 83 and is tied for 124th place.
The 54-hole event continues through Saturday and is being played at the Glenmaura National Golf Club, which features a par 71, 6,847-yard layout. The top 11 teams and two individuals (not on one of those 11 teams) advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 31-June 3 at Grand National Golf Course in Opelika, Ala.
