UNC Men's Golf Qualifies For NCAA Championship

MOOSIC, Pa. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team qualified for the NCAA Men's Golf Championship Saturday after finishing in a tie for ninth at the NCAA East Regional held at Glenmaura National Golf Course in Moosic, Pa. The Tar Heels were led by senior Max Harris whose final day 68 gave him a 214 for the tournament and a tie for third place in the individual standings.
Clemson posted a 54-hole, nineteen-over-par 871 to win the rain-plagued event. North Florida finished second with an 883, Georgia Tech third with an 884, East Tennessee State fourth with an 888 and Georgia fifth with a three-day total of 889.
Georgia senior Michael Morrison took home medalist honors with a one-under-par total of 212. Morrison moved into first place after 36-hole leader, Carl Petterson of N.C. State, signed an incorrect scorecard and his final round was disqualified. Virginia's James Driscoll finished one shot behind Morrison at 213. Carolina's Harris was third at 214 and a trio of Clemson Tigers - Jonathan Byrd, John Engler and Lucas Glover - finished tied for fourth with a final score of 215.
Carolina's Whitten Meares posted a 75 on Saturday to give him a final tally of 226, good for a tie for 43rd place. Rob Simmons finished in a tie for 62nd place after a final round 80 and a 229 for the tournament. Brad Hyler shot a 78 on Saturday to finish with a 232 and a tie for 80th place, and Paul Daniel tied for 87th after posting an 80 on Saturday and finishing with a 233 for the event.
The top eleven teams qualified for the NCAA Men's Golf Championship to be held at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama. Two individuals not on the eleven teams also qualified for the event to be held May 29 - June 3. The two individual qualifiers were Tennessee freshman Andrew Pratt and Virginia Commonwealth senior Reg Millage.
