UNC Men's Golf Stands Fourth At NCAA Championships

OPELIKA, Ala. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired a seven-under-par 282, a tie for the second lowest round of the day and Carolina's lowest round this spring, and is tied for fourth place with a seven-under 570 total after the second round of the NCAA Championships. The Heels are 13 shots behind team leader Oklahoma State which blistered the course with a 12-under 276 in the second round for a 557 total.
Top-ranked Georgia Tech is in third place at 562 total while Kent is in fifth place, one stroke behind the Heels, with a 571 total and UNLV is sixth at 573. Clemson stands tied for ninth place at 578 while Virginia was sent home with a 299 total and tie for 25th place. The other ACC participant, Wake Forest, will be in a playoff with Georgia for the last team spot Friday morning at 7:15 a.m. CT as the field is being trimmed to the top 15 teams and top nine individuals not on one of those 15 teams. After the team playoff Friday morning there will then be an individual playoff involving players at even par 144 (not on one of the top 15 teams). The third round is anticipated to begin at approximately 9:15 a.m. CT.
Carolina's Brad Hyler, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., fired a one-under 71 in the second round for a 140 total and is tied for 11th place. Senior Max Harris, from Worthing, England, was the low Tar Heel on day two firing a four-under 68 for a one-under 143 total and is tied for 21st place. Senior Paul Daniel, from Burlington, N.C., is also tied for 21st with a 143 total after posting a 69 in the second round.
First-round leader David Gossett of Texas and Charles Howell of Oklahoma State are deadlocked for the individual lead with 11-under 133 totals. East Tennessee State's Chris Wisler is in third place at 135 while Texas' J.J. Wall is fourth with a 136 total and Georgia Tech's Matt Kuchar and UNLV's Jeremy Anderson are tied for fifth place at 137.
Tar Heel Rob Simmons, a junior from Walterboro, S.C., is tied for 28th place at even par 144 while teammate Whitten Meares, a sophomore from Fair Bluff, N.C., posted a 155 total and is tied for 146th place.
The 72-hole event continues through Saturday and is being played at the Grand National Lake Course, which features a par 72, 7,003-yard layout. You can follow this year's NCAA Championships live on the internet at www.auburn.edu/athletics/ncaagolf.
