The following are some of UNC head coach Carl Torbush's thoughts a day after the Tar Heels moved to 2-0 with a 35-14 win over Wake Forest Saturday night at Groves Stadium in Winston-Salem. Coach Torbush had the following to say in his weekly Sunday teleconference with the local media.
On the running game:
"We know we need to get better on the running game inside the tackle box. That's something we will continue to work on hard. I think we're close, but we're not there yet."
On quarterback Ronald Curry:
"I said it last night and I'll say it again, I thought Ronald Curry had a good second half. He made some `competitive' bad decisions in the first half. He was just trying to make plays, and I think it's something Ronald will get better at with more experience. He doesn't have as much experience as a lot of us would like to think he has."
On Bosley Allen:
"Bosley Allen had a great game, an ACC Player of the Week type game. He was over 100 yards receiving and he had a tremendous game with punt returns. He was the difference-maker for us against Wake Forest."
On the defense:
"In my 13 years, I know we've never had 10 sacks in one game (Note: Carolina was credited with 10 QB sacks after a review of the game film). You see eight or nine sometimes, but I don't ever remember someone having 10. That's a great compliment to our defense. I felt like our defense played extremely well, until the end of the game. We did not tackle well on the second series, but then we began to play dominating defense. We put pressure on the quarterback, we had a number of hits on him and we played very physical football in the second half."
General Thoughts:
With our special teams, the play of our defense and then our offense being able to come together in the second half and make some plays when we needed them to, we were able to win the ballgame. By the end of the game, we had a pretty good lead, but it was a lot closer game than the score would indicate. What we need to do is to correct our small mistakes. I don't think we made as much improvement in that part of the game as we would like, but that's something we're going to work hard on this week. We know we have a phenomenal challenge, which anyone in the country does when they play Florida State. But I think our players will compete. We're going down there for one reason, and that's to try to come home with a victory.
On the injury to Merceda Perry:
"I'm really sad for Merceda. He's such a great young man, as a person as well as a football player. There's no doubt that he was having as good a game as he had played here at Carolina when he went down. His injury really depletes our depth at linebacker. We need some guys to step forward and play. We had hoped Kitwana Jones would just be a special teams player for us, but he may have to step up and play some more as well as David Thornton and Robert Harris. Quincy Monk started a few games late last year and now he'll move up and be one of our starters."
