ATLANTA - The North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 85-63, tonight in women's basketball at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
The Tar Heels, led by sophomore Coretta Brown and senior Juana Brown, kept Georgia Tech off-balance throughout the game and never trailed as head coach Sylvia Hatchell earned her 300th victory at UNC. "North Carolina is a really good team," Yellow Jacket head coach Agnus Berenato said. "They brought their A game tonight. They were better than us tonight. They were bigger and stronger than us. My compliments to Carolina. They played a really good game. But we hung in there. I didn't think we gave up."
"We showed tonight what kind of team we can be," Hatchell said. "We had played like that in spurts, but our youthfulness had hurt us in some games. We're gaining confidence and are working to be more consistent."
Senior Jaime Kruppa led Tech with 17 points and recorded seven rebounds and two assists. She led the Yellow Jackets from the free throw line, hitting 9-of-11 attempts. Sophomore Sonja Mallory tallied nine points and had team highs with eight rebounds and two blocked shots. But the inside duo combined to shoot just 38 percent from the field. The Yellow Jackets' starting shooting guards and top two scorers fared no better. Sophomore Niesha Butler scored 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting and junior Milli Martinez scored six points and was 2-of-10 from the field.
North Carolina improved to 11-9 overall and 5-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Georgia Tech fell to 11-9 and 2-7.
UNC returns to action on Sunday, hosting Wake Forest for a 2 p.m. game at Carmichael Auditorium.
