Haywood, Forte Dominate Men's Basketball Awards Banquet

Chapel Hill, N.C. -- Senior center Brendan Haywood and sophomore guard Joseph Forte collected the majority of the hardware on Tuesday night as the University of North Carolina men's basketball program honored its 2000-2001 squad at its annual banquet at the Smith Center in Chapel Hill. Haywood garnered six awards, including being named team captain, while Forte took home three, including the squad's Most Valuable Player distinction.
Haywood took home six awards, including being named the team's captain in a vote by his teammates. Haywood also won awards as the team's top defensive player, outstanding senior, top rebounder (co-winner with junior forward Jason Capel), top shot-blocker and for drawing the most charges during the season.
Forte was named the team's Most Valuable Player, becoming just the third sophomore since 1990 (joining Jerry Stackhouse in 1994-95 and Antawn Jamison in 1996-97) to be named Carolina's MVP. Forte took home two other awards, for having the team's best free throw percentage, as the team's overall statistical leader.
Other award winners included Julius Peppers (best field goal percentage), Michael Brooker (Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award), Brian Morrison (most determined freshman), Jonathan Holmes (most inspirational player), Jason Capel (outstanding rebounder co-winner), Kris Lang (best screener), Jim Everett (behind the scenes contributions), and Ronald Curry (most assists).
