CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Five University of North Carolina players and an incoming freshman headline the 16-member U.S. Field Hockey Women's Junior World Cup Team roster, announced recently by the U.S. Field Hockey Association.
Tar Heels Stephanie Fuller, Meredith Keller, Abby Martin, Amy Tran and Abbey Woolley will represent the U.S. in the international competition May 14-26 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Also on the squad is Carey Fetting-Smith, a standout high school player from Baltimore, Md., who will be a freshman on the UNC roster in the fall of 2001. She is one of two high school players named to the Junior World Cup team.
North Carolina's six representatives are the most of any collegiate program. Following UNC are Maryland, Michigan and Princeton with two players each on the squad.
The U.S. earned a spot among the 16 teams in the Junior World Cup field by finishing second in the Pan American Junior Championships in Barbados last spring. Nine members of the Junior World Cup team-including Fetting-Smith, Tran and Woolley-were members of the Pam Am team.
The U.S. team, which will be coached by former Australian Junior national player Tess Ellis, is 1-13 all-time at the Junior World Cup with its best showing a 10th-place finish in 1989. In 1997, Keller and Martin played on the U.S. squad that finished 12th. This year's competition marks the fourth time that the Junior World Cup has been contested.
