CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--University of North Carolina point guard Coretta Brown is among 36 collegiate players who have accepted invitations to the USA Basketball Women's National Team Trials, the USA Women's Collegiate Committee announced today. The trials will be held May 18-21 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and will be used to select a 12-member team for the World University Games, to be held Aug. 22-Sept. 1 in Beijing, China.
"I'm excited about the opportunity and feel privileged to be included in this group," said Brown, who begins final exams on Friday along with the rest of the UNC student body. "I definitely think the role I played this year at Carolina has put me in a position to be invited."
Brown, a 5-8 rising junior from Statesboro, Ga., earned second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2000-01. As a sophomore, she started all 29 games and averaged 15.9 points, second on the UNC team and fifth in the conference. She led the conference in assists (6.7 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.71) and set a school single-game record with 16 assists against North Carolina A&T on Nov. 21, 2000.
Carolina standout LaQuanda Barksdale, the 12th pick in the recent WNBA draft, played for the USA Basketball World University Games team in 1999. Other Tar Heel players who have competed in the World University Games are Sylvia Crawley (1995), Lori Gear (Canadian team, 1993), Marsha Mann (1973), and Charlotte Smith (1995).
Other ACC players participating in the 2001 trials are Georgia Tech's Niesha Butler, Clemson's Chrissy Floyd, NC State's Carisse Moody, Virginia's Telisha Quarles, Florida State's April Traylor and Maryland's Deedee Warley.
The 2001 USA Basketball Women's World University Games team will be coached by Debbie Ryan, the head coach at Virginia. Her assistants are Lisa Bluder (Iowa) and Dee Stokes (East Carolina).
