TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Monte Cummings scored 20 points and Delvon Arrington added 17 Wednesday night as Florida State took an 81-71 victory over North Carolina, sending the Tar Heels to their fourth straight loss.
Florida State (9-6, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) raced to a 16-3 lead and built its advantage to 28-10. But the Tar Heels managed to catch up, 45-45, early in the second half and took a brief lead, 50-49, on a 3-point shot by Adam Boone.
Florida State regained the lead, 51-50, on two free throws by Michael Joiner and held it for the rest of the game.
The win gave Florida State successive home court wins over Duke and North Carolina. Florida State gave top-ranked Duke its only loss of the year, 77-76, on Jan. 6.
Kris Lang scored 23 points for North Carolina (5-9, 1-4 ACC) which is off to its worst start since the 1938-39 season, when it also began 5-9.
