CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Ninth-ranked North Carolina will be underdog for the first time this season Wednesday night as the Tar Heel men's lacrosse team ventures to Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. to meet defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion Duke. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
UNC has won its first five games of the season, including three decisions by one goal, but the Heels will be challenged by the fifth-ranked Blue Devils (3-1 overall, 1-0 in the ACC).
Carolina has beaten the Blue Devils only once since 1996. Duke has won the past four meetings with Carolina. UNC will try to reverse that trend with a young lineup that includes four seniors, seven juniors, seven sophomores and 10 freshmen among the top 28 players in the rotation. Carolina starts only one senior, midfielder Tim Gosier, while senior Pat Jackson plays on the second midfield unit. UNC's top two scorers are both freshmen--midfielder Bryant Will with 15 points and attackman Jed Prossner with 14 points.
The match is worth three points in the 2001-02 Carlyle Cup competition given to the all-sports winner between the two schools. Carolina currently leads this year's standings 21 points to 9.5 points.
