CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Archivists at United States Lacrosse have confirmed that North Carolina and Navy played the longest game in college lacrosse history last Saturday, an 11-10 UNC triumph that included six overtime periods and 83 minutes and 39 seconds of play.
Research efforts by the U.S. Lacrosse staff in Baltimore turned up two five overtime games in the records. In 1973 Cornell defeated Penn 9-8 in five overtimes at Ithaca, N.Y. and in 1988 Massachusetts defeated Cornell 8-7 in five overtimes, also at Ithaca, N.Y.
In three games this season the Tar Heels have played 12 quarters plus nine overtime periods. The season opener against Ohio State went three overtimes on February 16.
