Men's Golf Slips To Fourth Place After Second Round Of ACC Championships

NEW LONDON, N.C. -- Georgia Tech held on to its team lead and North Carolina's Dustin Bray remained out front in the individual race following the second day of play in the 49th annual Atlantic Coast Conference men's golf championship being played over the challenging Old North State Club layout.
The Yellow Jackets, who built a nine-shot lead after firing a 17-under par 271 in Friday. s opening round, had only the fiftth best score Saturday and saw their lead sliced to just five strokes better than second place Clemson. The Jackets posted a four-under par 284 while North Carolina State and Wake Forest both had nine-under par 279's. Clemson turned in a 280 score and Florida State had a 282.
North Carolina State is in third place, 12 shots behind the leaders at 567 with North Carolina fourth at 568, followed by Wake Forest at 569, Florida State at 574, Virginia at 586, Duke at 589 and Maryland at 590.
ray, a sophomore from nearby Asheboro who posted a 66 to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round, built his lead to three shots in the individual race by firing a second-round 67. Georgia Tech. s Nicholas Thompson, a freshman from Coral Springs, Fla., is in second place with rounds of 67-69 and Matt Weibring, also from Georgia Tech, is third with rounds of 68-70.
Sophomore Bill Haas of Wake Forest along with D. J. Trahan and Gregg Jones, both from Clemson, are tied for the fourth spot with five-under 139's.
ray again had only one bogey on his round to go with six birdies. He had three birdies on each side with the bogey on the eight hole. Over the two days, Bray has carded 13 birdies and only two bogies for his 11-under 133 total.
Sub-par rounds were again the feature during the second round with 21 players posting rounds of 71 or better to to go with a pair of even-par rounds. There were 18 sub-par scores posted during the first round. The championship winds up on Sunday with the third 18-hole round over the par 72, 7,102-yard layout.
Play will begin at 8:30 with players from Virginia, Duke and Maryland going off in the first wave. North Carolina, Wake Forest and Florida State will comprise the second wave and Georgia Tech, Clemson and North Carolina State being paired in the final wave. The last group is scheduled to tee-off at 11:10.
