Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina's men's golf team was one of 27 teams to receive a bid to participate in the NCAA East Regional. The 54-hole event will be played May 16-18 at Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek in Roswell, Ga., which features a par 72, 7,119-yard layout.
In addition to the 27 teams, six individuals received a bid to play in the regional. The top 10 teams and the top two individuals not on those 10 teams will advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 29-June 1 in Columbus, Ohio.
Eight of the nine Atlantic Coast Conference teams received bids to play in one of the three regionals. Joining Carolina in the East Regional are Georgia Tech, Clemson, Wake Forest, Duke and Virginia. NC State and Maryland will play in the Central Regional in Little Rock, Ark.
"We're all excited that we're not only playing in Regionals, but that we're playing close to home," says Carolina Head Coach John Inman. "It's gratifying after how hard the guys worked this spring. But the hunger is still there - we want to advance; we are not happy just to be in Regionals."
Carolina has received a bid to the NCAA Regionals each year since the regional format was instituted in 1989. This marks the Tar Heels' 13th appearance in the East Regional and they have made one appearance in the Central Regional.
The Tar Heels captured the championship of the Seminole Intercollegiate earlier this spring and have carded four top-five and eight top-10 finishes this year. Sophomore Dustin Bray, ranked 19th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, is the reigning ACC Individual Champion and tied for individual medalist honors at The Prestige last fall.
Georgia Tech, the nation's top-ranked team, earned the top seed in the East Regional. The remainder of the field with their Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking in parenthesis is as follows: Clemson (2), Wake Forest (3), Florida (4), Tennessee (8), Auburn (10), Georgia (12), Augusta State (16), Alabama-Birmingham (30), College of Charleston (34), Duke (40), North Florida (41), North Carolina (42), South Carolina (43), Jacksonville State (49), Virginia, Michigan State, Coastal Carolina, Furman, Georgia Southern, Virginia Commonwealth, Penn State, South Alabama, William & Mary, Yale, Rhode Island and Iona.
