LINCOLN, NEB. - The second-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team used a pair of goals in the first six minutes of play Sunday afternoon to defeat Southern California 2-0 in the adidas Invite at the University of Nebraska's Abbott Sports Complex.
UNC junior defender scored for the Tar Heels at 4:25 of the match and sophomore Anne Felts scored just over a minute later at 5:36 to boost the Tar Heels to the victory. Junior Elizabeth Ball had an assist on Reddick's goal. For Felts, it was only the second goal of her career. She was assisted by junior midfielder Jordan Walker on the play.
oth goalkeepers played well in the match with Julie Person of the Women of Troy posting six saves and UNC senior starter Jenni Branam also posting six saves. The six saves for Branam were one short of her career high of seven set against Virginia during her sophomore season.
UNC improved to 1-0-1 on the season with the win and the victory ended a two-match non-winning streak for the Tar Heels which equalled the longest non-winning streak in UNC history. In its last two games, UNC had lost the 2001 NCAA title game to Santa Clara and then fought to a 1-1 tie with 10th-ranked Nebraska Friday night at the adidas Invite. Carolina has had six two-match non winning streaks in history. The five previous streaks were back to back losses. The last time that occurred was 2000 when UNC lost successive matches to Florida State and Wake Forest. The win over USC improved Carolina's all-time record over the past 24 years to 512-23-12.
Once again Coach Anson Dorrance substituted freely while using a makeshift lineup that is missing four potential starters. Seventeen of the 18 players on the travel list played in the match against the Women of Troy, all but backup goalkeeper Aly Winget. UNC will be back at full strength next Friday when the Tar Heels host the Nike Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field. Freshmen Lori Chalupny, Kendall Fletcher and Lindsay Tarpley return to the team Monday after playing with the U.S. Under 19 National Team at the World Championships in Canada and sophomore Sara Randolph should be back from a staph infection which prevented her traveling with the team to Nebraska.
Game in the Nike Carolina Classic next weekend have Duke playing Washington at 5 p.m. and North Carolina playing Guilford at 7 p.m. on Friday and UNC playing Washington at 1 p.m. and Duke playing Wofford at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
