CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The top-ranked North Carolina (3-0-1) women's soccer team showed its balance Sunday afternoon as five different players had one goal and seven different players had one assist in the Tar Heels' 5-1 victory over #15 Washington (3-1) at Fetzer Field. The game was played as part of the annual Carolina Nike Classic. #22 Duke (2-2) defeated Wofford (0-2-1) 2-0 in the second game Sunday.
The Tar Heels scored three first half goals and then added two more in the first 19 minutes of the second to build a 5-0 lead before Washington scored its only goal of the match in the 69th minute. Carolina outshot the Huskies 23-5, used 20 players in the match and capitalized on its depth with numerous substitutions on a hot afternoon.
Washington held the Tar Heels at bay until the 31st minute when sophomore midfielder Mary McDowell scored her third goal of the season off a nifty passing combination that included assists from junior striker Alyssa Ramsey and freshman midfielder Kacey White. Ramsey lofted a cross into the box that went beyond the reach of UW keeper Lisa Brookens and McDowell was there for the putaway into the left side.
UNC put the game essentially out of reach with goals just 49 seconds apart late in the first half. At 42:06, freshman forward Lindsay Tarpley scored her third goal of the weekend on a header after a cross from the right side by junior striker Elizabeth Ball. Junior midfielder Jordan Walker also assisted on the goal. Just 49 seconds later, the Tar Heels made it 3-0 as freshman defender Kendall Fletcher scored her first career goal, converting off a corner kick by freshman midfielder Lori Chalupny.
Carolina continued to put pressure on the Washington goal in the second half as sophomore midfielder Sara Randolph scored her first goal of the season in the 56th minute of play off an assist by senior forward Susan Bush. Bush ran down a ball on the end line, dribbled around a pair of opponents and slotted a pass to the charging Randolph at the six yard line for the putaway. A little over eight minutes later, Carolina scored for the fifth time when Ramsey got behind the Huskies' defense, took a pass from Tarpley and was one-v-one with Brookens, scoring the the left of the onrushing keeper.
Washington got its only goal at 68:23 when Jaime Carstensen got free in the penalty area only to see her shot saved by Aly Winget. The ball hit off the left post and then bounded across the goal mouth where White tried to save the shot but only succeeded in helping the ball into the goal. The official ruled the ball had already cross the line so Carstensen was credited with the goal.
In the second game, Duke got a goal in each half to beat Wofford. Lauren Simel scored for the Blue Devils in the 44th minute of the match and Brigid Bowdell added the insurance goal for Duke in the 6oth minute.
Team Most Valuable Players for the Nike Carolina Classic were Bush from Carolina, defender Andrea Morelli for Washington, defender Liz Wagner for Duke, goalie Danielle Brisotti for Guilford and midfielder Kate Schallhorn for Wofford.
Carolina returns to action next weekend in the Houston College Challenge Cup at Meyer Park in Spring, Texas, playing against a pair of Big 12 Conference teams. The Tar Heels meet Texas A&M next Fridat at 8 p.m. and Texas next Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern Time.
