Sea Island, Ga. - North Carolina junior Dustin Bray highlights the field at this year's Jones Cup which will be played Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at the Ocean Forest Golf Club here. Bray, the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference champion and semifinalist at the 2002 U.S. Amateur, is the highest ranked amateur in the event which includes 20 of the nation's top 50 amateur golfers. Bray is ranked seventh in the current Golfweek/Titleist Amateur Rankings.
Other participants include 10th-ranked Simon Nash, a member of the 2002 NCAA champion Minnesota Golden Gophers; Matt Rosenfield, the 2000 U.S. Junior champion; Trip Kuehne, runner-up to Tiger Woods in the 1994 U.S. Amateur; and Danny Green, the 1999 U.S. Mid-Amateur champion.
This marks the second Jones Cup event. The inaugural Jones Cup was played in 2001 and also took place at Ocean Forest Golf Club. The event was not held last year due to budget cuts caused mostly from a poor economy driven by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
ray, a 2002 PING second-team All-America, has four collegiate victories to his credit. Two of those came last fall when he won The International Collegiate and tied for medalist honors at The Ridges Intercollegiate. Bray is a two-time All-ACC performer (2001 and 2002), champion of the 2002 Cardinal Amateur and a participant for the United States in the 2002 U.S./Japan matches. Bray and the Tar Heels begin their spring season Feb. 17-18 at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
