Brown Earns ACC Honor

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina senior Coretta Brown has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for women's basketball after helping 11th-ranked UNC to three victories, two of them against ACC teams. The Tar Heels, now 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, defeated American 80-42 on Dec. 31, Georgia Tech 72-67 on Jan. 2 and NC State 80-59 on Jan. 5.
Brown averaged 16.3 points and 5.7 assists in the three wins.. She scored a season-high 23 points and played all 40 minutes in UNC's victory over the Yellow Jackets Thursday in Atlanta. Against NC State Sunday, she had 17 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field. In the conference games, she averaged 20.0 points and shot 65 percent from the field, 66.7 percent (8-for-12) from three-point range
The 5-9 guard from Statesboro, Ga., leads the Tar Heels in scoring this season with 12.8 points per game. A preseason candidate for the Naismith Player of the Year award, she earned All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament honors last season, but this is her first ACC Player of the Week nod.
Brown also was named the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week.
Florida State's Ganiyat Adeduntan was named ACC Rookie of the Week.
The Tar Heels return to action Thursday, hosting Wake Forest. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium.
