Sophomore point guard Raymond Felton had 20 points and nine assists to lead the "White" to a 77-70 win over the "Blue" in the University of North Carolina's intrasquad scrimmage Sunday at the Smith Center.
Felton was 6 for 11 from the floor and made all six attempts from the free throw line and committed only three turnovers. Sean May added 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the White. May left the game after being kicked in the right calf. He was held out of the final seven minutes as a precaution. Sophomores Rashad McCants and Damion Grant did not play due to injury. McCants has a strained right quadriceps and Grant had offseason knee surgery.
Freshmen Reyshawn Terry (12) and Justin Bohlander (10) combined for 22 points and sophomore David Noel had 12 points and four assists for the White.
Juniors Jawad Williams, Melvin Scott and Jackie Manuel combined to score 52 of Blue's 70 points. Williams led all scorers with 26 points, and Scott and Manuel added 13 apiece.
Williams was 10 of 16 from the floor and 6 for 6 from the free throw line and did not commit a turnover. Scott was 3 for 6 from three-point range. Manuel had six rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The teams combined to shoot 57.4 percent from the floor (58 for 101), had 27 assists and committed 21 turnovers.
The Tar Heels return to action Saturday, November 8, against North Carolina Central University. The basketball game will begin 90 minutes after the conclusion of the UNC-Wake Forest football game that starts at 12:10 p.m.
Head Coach Roy Williams comments:
"I talked to the guys before hand, our whole purpose was to try to get more out of it than we would a practice. In a lot of ways we did. I think when you put a whole group of people in the stands you tend to have a lot of game slippage and the guys forget the things you work on in practice. We've had 13 practices. Needless to say, we are not ready to run the ball like I want to. It is a difficult thing, even now, to get it out of the net as fast as I want them to get it out and its something we will continue to work on and try to get better at, but I liked the idea - I thought we had better shot selection. One team was 6 for 11 from three-point line, the other team was 2 for 2 because I don't like three-point shots unless its great shooters wide open. I think they've gotten adjusted to that part of it, but 13 practices; thank goodness we don't have to play a game today because we have a long ways to go.
I was probably more pleased with Jackie Manuel than anybody. I think he did some nice things; slashed to the basket trying to run and hopefully we can continue some of those kinds of things. Justin Bohlander did some nice things. Sean (May) did not hurt his bad foot. He got kicked on the other foot in the same spot about three times in a row so I decided not to play him the last seven minutes, but there is always worry. Nobody's heart jumps into their throat as much as it does mine, but at the same time it's the other foot and if I had to pick one guy that has had a better preseason than anybody, I'd probably pick Sean. But I felt good about what they've done through the first 13 practices and hopefully by the time we talk again next Saturday, we'll be better than we were today.
On the Rashad McCants injury: Rashad hasn't practiced in four practices at all and its definitely costing him. He's getting behind. I think Rashad is going to be a great, great player for us. It's very difficult to get this far behind and be able to perform as early. I don't know if we'll let him go the first couple of days this week - he's got a really bad quad strain. I feel for him just as much as I do for our team, but he's getting further and further behind - no question there.
