TarHeelBlue.com's Lateshia Chambers recently spoke with junior guard Jennifer Nelms, a new addition to the UNC women's basketball team. Nelms joined the squad this fall after two years of competing in track and field for the Tar Heels. She earned All-America honors in indoor track in 2003 as part of UNC's 4x400 relay team and will continue to compete for the team as the women's basketball schedule allows.
TarHeelBlue: After two years of running track at UNC, what do you hope to bring to the basketball team?
Jennifer Nelms: "From track, of course I hope to bring some quickness. We are a fast team and I think that having run track, I fit in with that. Quickness, up-tempo play and fast-breaking, that is the kind of basketball that I love to play and that is the kind of team that this is. "
THB: What brings you back to the game after two years?
Nelms: "I love the game. I honestly wanted to play when I first got to college, but I had some personal things that mentally I wasn't ready. I didn't have any kind of confidence in myself. Now, God has given me the opportunity to play, he opened up the doors for me and I just walked right through. "
THB: How is the basketball atmosphere different from track?
Nelms: "It's a huge difference. Basketball is a team-oriented sport and in track everything is individual. In track you have your teammates but you don't rely on each other the way you do on a basketball team. "
THB: Playing with this team and watching last year's team, how do you feel this team is different from last year?
Nelms: "This team is more goal-oriented. We know that we are good and we have it set in our minds to prosper."
THB: How do you feel your transition from basketball back to track will flow?
Nelms: "It shouldn't be a difficult transition because basketball keeps you in shape for track. Track is a running sport and I also do plenty of running in basketball."
